in newtown, connecticut. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett. this just in. listen. >> 6-7 muc. sandy hook school. caller thinks someone is shooting in the building. front glass is broken, unsure why. all units, the individual that i have on the phone is continuing to hear what he believes to be gunfire. units responding sandy hook school at this time, the shooting appears to have stopped. the school is in lockdown. >> that broken glass is the result of the gunman reportedly shooting his way into the school. the unthinkable tragedy has left this very small new england town shattered tonight. 28 people dead. that's including the shooter himself. most of those killed were students at the school. very, very young students. there were 20 children killed. between the ages of 5 and 10 years old. there were also 6 adults shot dead after a heavily armed gunman dressed in black fatigues and a military vest opened fire in the school. >> we just told a little boy about his sister now and just to see him, he said who am i going to play with? i have nobody to play with now. excuse me. >> the gunma

of connecticut, as well. trying to piece this all together, why did she have those guns? how did he get them? >> just one area i know will be a huge topic of conversation for days and months to come. another big question for so many the names of these children. there are 20 children who died. there are six adults who died in the school. there's nancy, the mother who died in her residence. when will we find out the official identities of these victims? >> right. law enforcement authorities are telling us it will be tomorrow morning. they expect to be releasing the identities. they have been working diligently to check, double check and triple check that they have all of the right people and obviously that everyone, members of the family have been notified. expect to hear that in the morning. >> so sad to see by exclusion they have made the identities obvious to family members who did not get reunited with their children but the positive i.d.s they talked about a forensic project they will be working on where the children's bodies are. thank you so much. we appreciate it. >> you are welcome. >

of the connecticut school shooting continues. erin burnett "outfront" starts right now. >>> good evening. breaking news. i'm ashleigh banfield in for erin burnett tonight. in newtown, connecticut, it is the scene of one of the worst school shootings in the history of the united states and we can report for you that police have now identified a school shooter as adam lanza. a shooter who killed 26 people today at the sandy hook elementary school here in this small connecticut town. 20 children were killed. 18 of them were pronounced dead right at the scene of the school. two of them were rushed to the hospital, hoping that they could save them. those children died at the hospital. six adults at the school were also shot dead. and they died at the scene as well. nancy lanza, a teacher at the school and a mother of the suspected shooter, was also killed. but she was found dead in her son's home in newtown. adam lanza, the 24-year-old brother ryan lanza, was taken into police custody. ryan lanza taken into police custody for questioning in hoboken, new jersey, earlier today. officials had not labeled

before she died. i want to bring in lieutenant paul vance with the connecticut state police. he's the lead spokes man, you've seen him speaking many times. it's been a very difficult job to have to update the world on what he knows. he joins me on the phone now with the latest. i appreciate it, we all do because everyone wants to understand what happened here. we have confirmed as you just heard, that nancy lanza was away in the days before the shooting. what can you tell us about her relationship with her son? >> i think what's important is to make sure that everyone understands that our investigators, our state police detectives have to take every piece of information and confirm it. ensure that it's totally accurate, and totally pristine and without error before we can come out publicly and state it. therefore, we haven't really come out and stated anything too too much relative to the relationship with the shooter, prior to the catastrophe that happened at the school. >> all right and i understand that. we don't want you to rush it, then have to change what you say, so i do

connecticut state university. now, this is according to the connecticut post which first broke the story and has this latest development on adam lanza's interest in the military. maryanne, thank you for taking the time of i can you spoke to one of nancy lanza's good friends. she told you adam was interested in joining the military. what was about it the military that made him interested? >> reporter: i think he had, what we're piecing together from ellen and other sources is that he had a fascination for a long ways back with things military-related. military equipment. he was a very, very bright young man. and when he first expressed that interest which was around the time he was ending his course work at western connecticut state university, initially his mother was very supportive of the idea and that's what several sources have told me. she was initially very supportive of it because it would have given him organization, structure, a career path even. and he was a very, very bright person. but as time wore on and she thought about it more and what she knew about her son, she realized

"outfront" searching for answers. that's what we've all been doing, trying to understand how this happened and why it happened. investigators in connecticut returned to the home of the gunman. the suspected gunman, 20-year-old adam lanza, searching for evidence. so far, authorities have been unable to retrieve any information from his computer, which was found smashed to pieces in the house he lived in with his mother, nancy. now, investigators have been trying to piece together an explanation for the crucial why, why did he do this, why did he shoot and kill his mother, why did he go to school -- a school that he had no link to and shoot 20 innocent children and six adults. the community is just starting to try to begin to heal. most students began going back to school, trying to go back into a routine today. they went back to school. police were standing guard outside the schools here. but the district superintendent said today that students and teachers from sandy hook elementary will not actually be going back to school until january, after winter break.

evening, everyone. i am erin burnett. out front tonight, the grieving community of newtown, connecticut began burying loved ones today. funerals were held for two 6-year-old boys, jack pinto and noah pozner. just moments ago we were approached by a representative for the family of 6-year-old md&a madeleine hsu. i will quote the words. she was sweet, unique, bright, spak lightning, determined little girl. she was an avid reader who loved running and dancing and she was a born leader. this is the start of what will be a very painful week as friends and family here prepare to say goodbye, to try to say goodbye to the 20 children and six educators killed on friday in the second worst shooting in american history. as newtown mourns, investigators are still trying to figure out what motivated adam lanza to go on a shooting spree and kill children and take the life of his own mother. we'll have more in a moment. the truth is we may never know why adam lanza may choose to go on a mass killing spree, why he may choose to go into a school and kill innocent 6 and 7-year-olds. we are learning a lot

"outfront" tonight, ryan, political analyst, roland martin. good to see you. is this just playing up to the nra or a plausible solution? >> it's certain ly not a plausible solution, but the problem is, there are no plausible solutions. there's a guy, a criminalnologist who wrote a great piece about this. the thing with mass shootings, these guys are well prepared. and so, the idea from the right that you're dpoipg going to arm politician official, have them at every school is false and the idea on the left that you're going to eliminate guns, that's also false. you have to look at the gun violence problem more broadly rather than fighting the last war. >> but there is a disconnect in this conversation. the quote from frank lutz. here's what he had to say about the nra's propos. >> the public wants guns out of the schools, not in and they're not asking for a security official or someone else. i don't think the nra is listening. i don't think they understand. most americans would prote
